The Minnesota Vikings fired head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman on Monday.

Zimmer was the seventh-longest tenured coach in the NFL. He finishes with a record of 72-56-1 and a 2-3 playoff record after eight seasons. He led the Vikings to the NFC Championship game in 2017.

The Vikings finished 8-9 this season and missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year, the first time that's happened in Zimmer's tenure with the team.

"While these decisions are not easy, we believe it is time for new leadership to elevate our team so we can consistently contend for championships," the Vikings said in a statement.

Spielman has been with the Vikings since 2006 and as GM since 2012. He signed quarterback Kirk Cousins to a three-year deal worth a guaranteed $84 million in 2018. Cousins has led the Vikings to one playoff appearance.
